In a series of sessions, over five weeks, we will be focusing on the Windrush Generation and each session will include lived experiences and Windrush stories, historical facts, and discussions.

Session 1:
A. Who Were The Black Britons Before The Windrush Generation?
Before the Empire Windrush arrived in 1948, Black Britons were already arriving and settling in Britain. Who were they? Where did they come from? How did they get here? Why were they here to do? How long have they been here? What did they do?
B. Why Did The Windrush Generation Come to Britain?

The Empire Windrush, on arriving in June 1948 with 492 Jamaicans on board, has become a symbol of post-war migration by people from the Caribbean colonies to the UK.
On Tuesday 22nd June its Windrush Day, where we remember and celebrate the pioneering spirit of those Caribbean people who travelled to work and live in the UK. They faced many challenges, achieved much, and changed the face of British society. In this course we will explore why they came and how their decisions impacted the Caribbean, families left behind, and family life in Britain.
Session 2:
Life In Britain, 1948-1962
After the arrival of the Empire Windrush, those who had decided to work to rebuild the 'Motherland' were subjected to a challenging and hostile environment. Dreams were sometimes shattered and other times they were realised. It took much resilience, determination, and strength to remain. What were their experiences? What new challenges did they face? Who were against them and who were for them?
Session 3:
The Black British Civil Rights Struggle
The American civil rights struggle had, since the days of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr, increasingly been recognised all over the world. However, few people are aware of Black British civil rights and their struggles against the 'colour bar' and discrimination. What were the main Black British civil rights struggles? Who was involved? What did they achieve?
Session 4:
Their Legacy & Achievements
The Windrush Generation have left a huge legacy in music, dance, business, fashion, politics, language, and much more. Much of their achievements are unwritten and live in the memories of people they have worked or socialised with over the years. What are these legacies and achievements? How are these legacies and achievements being carried forward into the lives of their descendants? Are they being celebrated?
Session 5:
Descendants of the Windrush Generation
The descendants of the Windrush Generation - their children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren - are today faced still faced with old struggles such as racism. However, there are some new struggles and challenges such as over-representation in the prison system, major issues in mental health, microaggressions in the workplace, and much more. What can they learn from the experiences of their ancestors, the Windrush Generation?
