About Dreams of Freedom

Dreams of Freedom are stories about an island’s resistance and resilience. We marvel at how an enslaved people were able to emancipate themselves. It is written by historian Linford Sweeney who wanted to explore the narrative of oppression.

Pre-emancipation, we see that the stories are set against the backdrop of the colonial island of Jamaica, where each will paint a sinister picture of struggle, bondage and cruelty that most of the island’s ancestors faced daily. Defiant and sometimes clandestine songs of comfort became songs of resistance and revolution. Post-slavery, we then look at the transformation into healing, self-belief, triumph and restorative love.

The characters in this book are incredibly courageous, strong and embrace the future with great optimism in their hearts. With childhood sparkles of hope, dreams and desires fulfilled, you will be left feeling inspired, empowered and more knowledgeable about the ability of the human spirit to overcome.

Dreams of Freedom will be available to order on
